Job Title: ZOO ANIMAL SPECIALIST III (SR-22) MAMMALS

Performs professional work in, and supervises and has immediate responsibility for the daily activities of an assigned zoological exhibit area of the Honolulu Zoo; conducts zoological research and develops public service programs relative thereto; and performs other related duties as required.

 Additional Job Information:
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

There is one vacancy with the Department of Enterprise Services, Honolulu Zoo. The position involves working irregular hours, nights, weekends and holidays. List may be used to fill future vacancies in this department.

 Minimum Qualification Requirements:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in zoology or a related biological science. Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.

VERIFICATION REQUIREMENT: At time of application, you must submit evidence of your education (reproduced copy of diploma and/or transcript which shows the embossed seal) in order to be given credit. Documents will not be returned.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Two years of professional experience in animal exhibition, care and management work at a zoo or zoological park.

Such experience must demonstrate the knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in the custodial care, housing and exhibition of zoo animals; basic zoo management practices and principles; principles and practices of supervision; behavioral patterns and reproductive requirements of mammals, birds or reptiles, as applicable; classification of animals and compatibility of different animals to one another; methods and techniques used in capturing and transporting animals; research methods pertaining to zoological studies; hazards, safety measures and precautions involved in the exhibition and care of animals; and the ability to conduct zoological research pertaining to animal diets, growth, genetics and relation to environment; interpret and utilize technical literature; plan and develop animal propagation programs; plan, coordinate and supervise the work of subordinates; diagnose training and development needs of subordinates and conduct training programs; analyze work methods and procedures and implement changes and modification for improvements; conduct tours and give talks to special groups and the general public on a wide range of animal subjects; enforce zoo regulations and safety precautions; maintain records and prepare technical reports, research papers and educational material; establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and the general public.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE: Professional experience in the care of mammals.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3) prior to appointment.
