Library Aide is a part time, extra-help (non-benefited) position assigned to a community library or to the Central facility. Working under direct supervision, the Library Aide shelves and retrieves library materials, and performs various clerical and office support tasks. In addition to these basic duties, Library Aides keep library material neat and orderly; operate standard office equipment including fax and copy machines; perform routine processing of some library materials; use the online computer for basic circulation functions; assist with library programs; pack and unpack library material; and perform other duties, as assigned.

Library Aides must be available to work a schedule that typically includes a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts. These positions are part time, generally between 10-20 hours per week.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

We seek candidates who are interested in working in the library environment and maintaining a user-friendly library. We are interested in individuals who are comfortable working with the public as well as working independently. Ease in learning to use the online computer system and operate office equipment is highly desirable. In some community libraries, the ability to speak a second language is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:
  • Work the required schedule;
  • Perform physical tasks such as lifting and moving library material up to 50 pounds;
  • Organize and file material in alphabetical and numerical order;
  • Follow written and oral instructions;
  • Work independently with minimum supervision;
  • Work effectively as a team member; and 
  • Develop customer service skills. 

 Qualifications:
Candidates will have:
  • Knowledge of :  Library functions and purposes.
  • Skill / Ability to :  Carry out written and oral instructions about library routines; file books and periodicals according to established library systems; and alphabetize, read and perform simple arithmetic.

SELECTION PROCESS

Submitted applications will be kept on file for six months. When a vacancy occurs the library branch will invite the applicants to a written exam. Those passing the exam will be invited to an interview. From the interview, the most qualified candidate will be offered the position. Selection and hiring of new employees may be made at any time during this process.
It is the applicant's responsibility to keep a current application on file with the branches were they are interested in working.
