Job Summary

Do you want to make a positive impact on residents in Bellevue? Do you have a passion for traffic safety? The City of Bellevue's Neighborhood Traffic Safety Services (NTSS) group is looking for a student intern to assist with our pedestrian safety, school safety, neighborhood parking, and traffic calming projects. Through a variety of programs and projects, staff members work to address resident concerns through education efforts and traffic safety projects. Bring your passion, skills and fresh outlook to this dynamic team!
 
You would assist with special projects, writing technical reports, updating multiple databases and assist with a variety of other tasks. Some projects assigned may take 6 months or more to complete while others are sporadic.  
 
The ideal candidate would be available to work through the 2018-2019 school year, part-time when school is in session (12-15 hours a week) and full-time (30-40 hours a week) during summer months and school breaks (if available). 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with staff to prepare a plan to evaluate radar speed feedback sign performance, effectiveness and efficiency. Work will include conducting research and analyzing traffic data such as speed and volume studies, reported collisions, roadway characteristics, proximity to schools and walkability. Compile data and write technical reports.
  • Plan and manage city's annual involvement in Walk to School Day at elementary, middle and high schools. Recruit volunteers to lead activities at each school. Develop promotional and advertising materials such as giveaways for participants. Communicate with Parent Teacher Student Association and school representatives.
  • Annually update project ranking list with reported collision data.
  • Update representative photos of traffic calming and safety features for use in newsletters, informational brochures or NTSS publications.
  • Update ongoing speed and volume study mapping in city mapping software.
  • Conduct field reviews, research traffic data, and draft Traffic Analysis Reports (TAR).
  • Design newsletters, flyers, pamphlets, etc.
  • Issue Residential Parking Zone (RPZ) permits.
  • Archive old documents and project folders.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Provide exceptional customer service when communicating with residents

  • Ability to understand and follow directions
  • Ability to research projects, problem solve, and present conclusions
  • Ability to complete projects within specified timeframes
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees at all levels and the public
  • Knowledge in using Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Knowledge or desire to learn and use publishing and design software such as Publisher or equivalent
  • Photography skills are a plus
 
Education, Experience, and Other Requirements:
  • Must be enrolled and attending a two or four-year college or university
  • Student's target degree in civil engineering, urban planning, or field of interest that complements the position
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license

Definition of a Student Intern:
  • Must be enrolled in a bona fide education program. Full time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns.
  • During the school year must be scheduled to work 20 hours or fewer per week.
  • During special situations (i.e. specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours, up to full time, if appropriate.
  • Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program.
  • At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
