Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area is seeking a highly motivated and qualified transportation professional to work across multiple disciplines in the transportation planning and engineering field. As a Senior Transportation Planner in the Capital Projects Section, this position is responsible for all aspects of project management and coordination for complex multi-modal transportation projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinates the development, design, and review of transportation projects, plans, and feasibility studies. This includes intersection, roadway, and multi-modal projects, such as pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and parking facilities.
  • Reviews traffic studies, planning reports, and design plans and resolves project issues.
  • Performs traffic safety operational analysis and reviews and analyzes accident data.
  • Prepares project planning studies, project scopes, cost estimates, and concept designs.
  • Prepares technical reports, correspondence, board items, status reports, meeting summaries, and other written materials and makes presentations as needed to describe the results of technical evaluations, analyses, and reviews performed.
  • Prepares, oversees, and monitors program and project schedules, and manages consultant contracts.
  • Off-site meetings and site visits may require the operation of a personal and/or county vehicle.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, and/or transportation design for roadway and multimodal projects.
  • Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities;
  • Experience in data management and GIS information and analysis;
  • Experience in coordinating with local, state, and federal government entities, boards, commissions, authorities and transportation agencies, as well as elected officials;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, the development community, colleagues, and the general public;
  • Strong analytical skills, excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Professional license in engineering or planning;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to operate a motor vehicle  All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
