Job Announcement

Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area is seeking a highly motivated and qualified transportation professional. The position serves as a Transportation Planner, as part of Capital Projects and Traffic Engineering Division of the Fairfax County Department of Transportation. Coordinates all aspects of project management for multi-modal transportation projects. Participates in the development, design, and review of transportation projects, plans, and feasibility studies. This includes intersection, roadway, and multi-modal projects, such as pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and parking facilities. Reviews transportation facility design plans and resolves project issues. Develops scopes for new projects, which includes developing project cost estimates. Reviews traffic studies and data, and performs transportation planning analyses. Prepares technical reports, correspondence and other written documents. Manages and reviews consultant studies. Coordinates project development with residents, agencies, and elected officials. Attends the public hearings, workshops, community, state and national events. Off-site meetings may require the operation of a personal and/or County vehicle. May be responsible for managing consultant contracts and invoicing. Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field. 

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of traffic engineering and analysis.
  • Two years of experience in using geographic information system (GIS) tools, database software, design software, and/or traffic analysis tools.
  • Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities;
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing transportation analysis;
  • Experience in coordinating with local, state, and federal government entities, as well as elected officials
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong negotiation skills;
  • Professional license in engineering or planning.;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, public officials, and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
