Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multi-modal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking an innovative, strategic, and highly qualified Transportation Planner to join the Special Projects Division, primarily responsible for representing the County’s interests on large-scale, complex regional transportation projects. This position presents a unique opportunity to work on a wide variety of transportation planning studies, capital projects, and multi-modal transportation solutions. In a dynamic and quickly evolving environment, this position will provide a challenging and rewarding experience for an individual invested in achieving the County’s strategic transportation goals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating transportation projects through various stages of planning, design, engineering, construction, and project closeout across multiple stakeholders, including residents, businesses, Fairfax County agencies, elected and appointed officials, project consultants and contractors, and other entities, such as the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and Federal Transit Administration.
  • Reviewing land use studies to assess the impacts of proposed land development on large-scale, complex transportation projects.
  • Reviewing traffic analyses related to significant transportation initiatives and developing strategies to mitigate congestion.
  • Reviewing engineering plans and construction project materials.
  • Preparing monthly and quarterly reports, primarily for federally funded projects.
  • Preparing presentations for community meetings, advisory groups, technical working committees, briefings for senior leadership, elected, and appointed officials, and other audiences, as required to meet specific audience needs.
  • Providing technical support for two special transportation tax districts.
  • Attending project-related meetings and workshops, both in-person and virtual, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background investigation, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree and four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional, or transportation planning, or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytic and technical skills, as well as experience in transportation planning and transportation capital project construction.
  • Experience with large-scale, complex transportation projects.
  • Experience in coordinating with local, state, and federal government organizations, especially in the Washington, D. C. metropolitan area.
  • Experience in inspecting transit facilities and construction projects.
  • Familiarity with land conveyance requirements.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills, including ability to coordinate multiple projects, prioritize, and meet established deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Strong oral communication skills, as well as experience presenting to and providing subject matter expertise for and engaging with elected and appointed officials, staff, and the community.
  • Desire to advance a collaborative and supportive culture.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and document. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
