Nature of Work

Lifeguards are primarily responsible for responding to emergencies, providing first aid in the event of an emergency, enforcing pool rules, and ensuring the overall safety of pool patrons and program participants. This position requires a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence. In addition to preventing accidents and maintaining a safe aquatic environment, lifeguards are also responsible for providing excellent customer service to all pool patrons.
 
  Duties and Responsibilities:
  

  • Ensure safety of all patrons through effective lifeguarding in compliance with American Red Cross standards
  • Respond to and take charge in emergency situations
  • Enforce pool rules, policies and city ordinances
  • Effectively work with other aquatic staff members and members of the safety team
  • Assist with opening/closing procedures and follow opening/closing checklists
  • Arrive on-time and prepared for scheduled shifts
  • Attend all pre-season and weekly trainings
  • Complete all required paperwork and turn in timecards in a timely manner
  • Provide excellent customer service to all pool patrons and program participants
  • Handle cash/credit transactions accurately
  • Follow the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Summer Pools handbook
  • Timely completion of additional duties assigned by Pool Manager or Aquatics Coordinator
Hours:
 Hours vary dependent on pool assignment and programing at assigned location. Lifeguards can be full or part-time. Full time: 30-40 hours per week. Part-time: 20-30 hours per week.
  

Minimum Training and Experience

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Experience working directly with people
  • Basic customer service skills
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, and/or kneel for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to be in the water for extended periods of time
  • Reliable transportation or ability to get to scheduled shifts on time
  • Preferred certifications (we will provide any required certification upon hire- at no cost):
    1. American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Water Park certification Preferred)
    2. American Red Cross First Aid
    3. American Red Cross CPR/AED
    4. American Red Cross Emergency Oxygen
    5. Swim instructor/Water safety instructor
  • Prerequisite swim skills needed to be able to pass certification course:
  1. Be able to complete a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
  2. Be able to complete a 2 minute tread using legs only
  3. Have the ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20-yards with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder, within 100 seconds
