Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Judicial Branch. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise. 


The Iowa Judicial Branch is looking to fill an Official Certified Shorthand Reporter to assist the state. Court Reporter for the 8th Judicial District.  Primarily assigned to Chief Judge Mary Ann Brown, but may be assigned to work for any Judicial Officer in the 8th Judicial District per operational needs and may require travel. 

Domicile to be determined depending on candidate selected.  

Position Summary

Take court testimony and proceedings by shorthand reporting methods.  Reads back court testimony and proceedings upon request.  Makes verbatim typed record of testimony and proceedings as required. 

Prepares transcripts, performs general office work and provides substantial clerical support for the court.  Marks and records exhibits during court proceedings.  Electronic document filing is required in all District 8 counties, so a high level of computer proficiency is essential. 

Performs related work as determined by the Chief Judge or supervising judicial officer or designee.  Specific primary assignment(s) as designated by the District Court Administrator.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school (GED); graduation from a school of court reporting with courses including legal and medical terminology, English, typing and law.  Certification as a court reporter by the Iowa Board of Shorthand Reporters preferred.  Must be certified as a court reporter by the Iowa Board of Shorthand Reporters, or obtain certification within six months of date of hire.
