Summary

This position is responsible for translating documents, participating in outreach and recruitment activities, assisting voters with limited English proficiency, conducting research, and providing administrative support.

Work schedule: This position is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Hours may vary depending on workload. This position will work

 

  • 40 hours /week the following months: June, July, August, and September
  • 20 hours /week 4 months of the year
  • 4 months/year (will not work)

Job Duties

Translate election-related documents and web materials to Vietnamese, including but not limited to voter registration information, letters and other correspondence to minority language voters, signs, posters and other material for polling places, Notice of Elections, ballot titles and Voters Pamphlets information such as candidate’s statement, measures, resolutions and related statements.

Answer inquires and speaks with Vietnamese language voters.

Review, edit and proofread all translated documents produced by translation service providers and others for accuracy, clarity and consistency.  

Participate in outreach events which publicize election services and resources. 

Provide overall administrative support, including performing duties related to documents tracking, filing and data management.  Regular use of Outlook, Word and Excel. 

Assess minority language voters needs by researching voter, demographic and other data, reviewing voter registration data reports, and communicating with advocacy and community based groups and organizations. 

 
Provide election specific information relating to established policies, procedures, codes, regulations and other relevant sources, in English and Vietnamese, to internal and/or external customers by telephone, in writing and/or in person.  

Format and lay out documents using InDesign (will train) for publishing, and Voter Pamphlets before Primary and General elections and other publications.

 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

The most competitive applicants will have all of the following:

 

Must be able to read and write Vietnamese.

 

Must have certificate from a formalized training certification program preferably Vietnamese. 

 

High level of language to include interpreting, reading, writing and speaking in both English and Vietnamese. (Candidates will be tested to determine translation skills and language proficiency.) 

 

Training in language translation and experience in translating official documents from English to Vietnamese and vice versa. 

 

Three (3) years of experience in translation of written documents from English to Vietnamese and vice versa, including the translation of technical or legal documents. 

 

Must have office and computer skills including the use of Word, Excel, and Outlook.  (Candidates will be tested on office and computer skills.) 

 

Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. 

 

Ability to organize work assignments, set priorities, and follow through on work assignments.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in language-related field. 

 

Five (5) years of experience in translation of written documents from English to Vietnamese or vise versa, including the translation of technical or legal documents. 

 

Computer skill in the use of Adobe InDesign application software.
