ABOUT THE POSITION

The Public Health Nurse (PHN) functions as a core member of the COVID Response Unit and the Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Unit, under supervision by the Supervising Public Health Nurse. These Units fall under the Public Health Division within the Health and Human Services Department at the County of Marin.
 
The COVID Response Unit includes 4 Teams:

  1. Contact Investigation (CI) Team, 
  2. Mobile Vaccine Team,
  3. Infection Control Prevention (IPC) Team, 
  4. Integrated Communicable Disease (ICD) Team 
The Public Health Nurse (PHN) will be assigned to one of the four primary teams, and as the need arises, support or cover other teams. The Public Health Nurse utilizes nursing processes including but not limited to assessment, monitoring, surveillance, vaccine administration, and health education for the promotion of optimal health.  The Public Health Nurse functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team and may provide direction and guidance to other team members and collaborate with community organizations. The PHN supports team outreach efforts by assisting in creating content for informational materials, conducting presentations for various audiences, and organizing community efforts aimed at prevention and mitigation of disease and promotion of health for individuals and communities.
 
There are currently two (2) fixed-term (temporary) Public Health Nurse I/II positions available. One position ends on 6/30/2023 and the other on 11/26/2022.
 
These fixed-term positions are initially funded up to June 30, 2023, and November 26, 2022. Please note, these positions may end prior to June 30, 2023, and November 26, 2022, if funding ceases, or the work is complete.  In addition, these positions may continue after June 30, 2023, and November 26, 2022, if funding is renewed or extended. Per PMR 48.2, fixed-term employees are not subject to Reduction in Force rights at the completion of the term. 

Highly Desirable: Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are highly desirable.

Bilingual Testing/Certification: Please note if the successful candidate has bilingual skills, they must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to receiving differential pay. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered at that time to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.

The ideal candidate has a strong nursing background with expertise in public health, patient care, education, and quality assurance.   The ideal candidate demonstrates strong critical thinking skills, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, and has the curiosity to learn and adapt to a changing environment.  The candidate possesses strong computer skills and the ability to quickly learn new technology.  The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of and/or experience with diverse communities.  The ideal candidate is knowledgeable and/or has experience creating and conducting community presentations and preparing health education materials for individuals and populations, always being sensitive to the cultural makeup of the audience.   Additionally, the ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and develop positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, community organizations, and the public.  Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are highly desirable, but not required.

Public Health Nurse IRequires a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the state of California and a Public Health certificate; no experience required.

Public Health Nurse II (in addition to the above): 
Requires two years of professional public health nursing experience at the Public Health Nurse I level. 

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid Registered Nurse License and a Public Health Certificate issued by the State of California.
  • Possession of a current CPR certificate.
  • When driving on County business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required.

All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
