The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is excited to announce its Pathway to Government College Mentorship Program for the summer of 2022 (formally known as the College Internship program).  The MTC Pathway to Government College Mentorship Program provides students/mentees with the opportunity to gain professional work experience in transportation planning, estuary, technology, finance, and/or operational projects.

For the summer of 2022, the mentorship program will primarily be held virtually and positions are full-time for eight weeks from Monday, June 13, 2022 through Friday, August 5, 2022.  Mentees will have job assignments and a dedicated mentor who will help develop and guide mentees in their overall career interests and provide exposure to what it is like working for a regional government agency.

For summer 2022, we have opportunities in the following areas:
  1. Technology Services Section (TSS/Service Delivery) - The mentee will support the Service Delivery business unit manager in the daily duties related to business management, funding, inventory, documentation, project coordination, hardware and software procurement. The mentee will also be exposed to processes related to helpdesk/infrastructure work and vendor application support.
  2. Technology Services Section (TSS/511 System) - The mentee will work closely with the 511 group within the Technology Services section. Through assigned tasks, the mentee will be trained on the basics of the 511 system and its operations. The mentee will be exposed to many intelligent transportation technology components and processes so that they can develop an appreciation and knowledge about Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) as a potential future professional in this field.
  3. Funding, Policy & Programs (FPP/Coordinated Public Transit-Human Services Transportation Plan Update)  The mentee will learn the RFP (request for proposal) process, review consultant contracts and project documents, learn the basics of outreach and public engagement, review outreach materials, transcribe public comments and participate/facilitate in outreach meetings.
  4. Regional Planning Program (RPP/Major Plans) - The mentee will perform essential preparatory tasks such as researching the status of existing transportation electrification initiatives within the Megaregion, identifying and coordinating with potential external speakers, and provide administrative support for meeting planning and preparation.
  5. Regional Planning Program (RPP/Mobility Team) The mentee will work with staff on several transportation planning efforts, including the Connected Transit Network Plan, the Community-Based Transportation Planning program, and the implementation of the Transit-Oriented Communities Policy.  The mentee will help with tasks including data analysis, data visualization, and research on related planning efforts within the Bay Area and in peer regions.
  6. San Francisco Estuary Partnership (SFEP/Communications) -  The mentee will assist in the development and implementation of an organization-wide strategic communications plan. Specific tasks may include conducting and compiling social media market research, conducting a communications SWOT analysis for the organization, and presenting actionable recommendations at the end of the summer to SFEP staff on what we can do to better connect with our audience.
  7. San Francisco Estuary Partnership (SFEP/Clean Vessel Act Program) - The mentee will assist in the development of a methodology that helps the Clean Vessel Act grant program to determine how much vessel sewage is kept from California’s waterways using sewage pumpout facilities. The ideal mentee would have a natural science and/or engineering background and would be assigned tasks that may include conducting scientific or white paper literature reviews, testing pumpout equipment under staff guidance, surveying public behavior, and drafting a trial methodology.
  8.  Finance & Accounting - The mentee will work in the finance and accounting section performing several functions related to the following areas:
