The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.  For more information about MTC, visit www.mtc.ca.gov.    

The San Francisco Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) is a coalition of the Bay Area’s nine counties – a network of local governments partnering to promote resource efficiency at the regional level, focusing on energy, water, and greenhouse gas reductions. BayREN works collaboratively with a wide range of staff at each county.

The Junior Communications Coordinator - BayREN position will be filled at the Junior salary grade and would serve as a key member of BayREN’s team with a wide variety of duties including: coordinating with various local government and sustainability staff to implement BayREN’s five-year regional marketing and communication plan; overseeing the creation and effective promotion of content for websites, social media channels, and print and digital collateral; producing monthly and quarterly content schedules; and leading monthly communications meetings with various public sector stakeholders.

All employees at MTC are classified as Disaster Services Workers.   

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: 

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint and/or related productivity software, such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms.
  • Familiarity with Drupal web platform and Salesforce customer relationship management software preferred. 
  • Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or related graphic design software applications or tools. 
  • Ability to create engaging presentation materials, fact sheets, social media posts, and similar materials that communicate value to various audiences.
  • Ability to work on different projects concurrently.
  • Work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a team environment. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Spanish fluency strongly preferred. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An appropriate combination of education and experience that has provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is:
 
Education:  Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate discipline related to the area of assignment such as communications, public affairs, environmental studies, or business/public administration.  (Applicants with a degree issued from an institution outside the United States must have their transcripts evaluated by an academic accrediting service and provide proof of equivalency along with their application.)       
Experience:  No professional working experience is required.

An Associate degree in an appropriate discipline and at least one year of increasingly responsible experience related to the area of assignment is an alternative qualification.

License/Certificate:  Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record, or the ability to provide alternate transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Website and Related Media Communications

  • Working routinely with BayREN Program Managers to create, identify, and promote program or portfolio activities through BayREN’s website, newsletter, and social media channels. 
  • Maintaining a current and accurate list of events for display on the public website; identifying event trends and making recommendations to improve accessibility of events, such as inventorying which programs are producing collateral in multiple languages.
  • Collaborating with MTC/ABAG’s Legislation and Public Affairs team to identify, draft, and promote content which publicly highlights accomplishments of the BayREN programs.
  • Updating and maintaining BayREN’s various data platforms (i.e., SharePoint) in collaboration with Program Managers and County Representatives.
  • Updating BayREN website and pages.
 Regional Communications Liaison 
  • Serving as a liaison by coordinating with BayREN Program Managers and County Representatives to produce cohesive subprogram branding and other collateral in accordance with BayREN’s branding guidelines. 
  • Developing jurisdiction-specific communications materials (PowerPoint presentations, social media posts, digital/print collateral, etc.)
  • Identifying potential activities or events for BayREN sponsorship.
  • Facilitating and leading monthly communications meetings to provide activity updates to stakeholders. 
  • Leading minor and ad-hoc marketing-related activities, such as working with consultants to design business cards and purchasing materials for giveaway prizes. 

HYBRID WORK: Employees may need to be in the office due to assignments/tasks that are only able to be done in the office or at a designated MTC work assignment location.  For this position, in office team collaboration is encouraged on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

THE FOLLOWING ARE AMONG THE BENEFITS OFFERED TO EMPLOYEES OF MTC:

  • Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); employee contributes a portion of gross salary on a pre-tax basis.
    • MTC is subject to California Pension Reform and as of January 1, 2013 will offer two pension plans. The plan employee will receive will be based on the individual's historical pension plan membership. HR will discuss this directly with all final candidates.

  • Health Benefits Insurance through the Public Employees' Retirement System (premiums are shared between agency and employee).

  • Agency-paid Dental Insurance (dependent coverage shared by the employee and MTC).

  • Agency-paid Vision Care Insurance, employees only (dependent coverage is paid in full by employee).

  • Eleven paid holidays per year.
  •    
  • One day per month paid vacation leave; for each year of service, an additional day per year is granted to a maximum of 25 days per year.

  • One day per month paid sick leave, with no limit to the amount of sick leave that can be accumulated. (May cash out up to 240 hours of accumulated sick leave upon separation from the Agency.)

  • Personal Business leave; up to three (3) days per year depending upon date of hire.
