The Sheriff's Communications Center is recruiting individuals who are capable of assertively taking command of situations in a sensitive and straightforward manner while showing consideration and respect of others for the position of Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatcher.
Staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Sheriff's Communications Center provides the highest quality, professionally competent public safety services to over one million residents of San Diego County. Our state-of-the-art facility located in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego has fully adjustable ergonomic workstations, utilizing some of the most advanced radio and computer systems in public safety.
Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatchers are responsible for handling the full range of radio and telephone emergency and non-emergency communications involving a variety of local governmental operations (law enforcement, fire, medical, etc.). TO QUALIFY YOU MUST BE ABLE TO RESPOND "YES" TO EITHER #1 OR #2 LISTED BELOW:
  1. Possess one (1) year of progressively responsible full-time experience as a Public Safety Radio Dispatcher for a municipal law enforcement or fire agency within the last three years and experience must include use of a Computer Aided Dispatch system and 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency call taking. Previous experience must have included the successful and verifiable completion of a radio training program administered by that agency; OR,
  2. Successful completion of the Sheriff's Radio Training Program, as a full-time Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatcher Trainee administered by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The completion of this program must be verified by a Certificate of Completion, signed and approved by the Sheriff's training supervisor and Sheriff's management assigned to the Communications Center; AND,
     
    • Be 18 years or older.
    • Possess effective oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Pass work simulated computer-based performance test (see below).
    • Have no felony convictions (Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on number, recency, and severity).
    • Be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends (24-hour facility - Premium of $.55 per hour for night shift work). 
    **Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatcher Trainee is the entry-level classification to Sheriff's Emergency Services Dispatcher and is a separate recruitment from this one.
HOW TO APPLY:

Applications are completed online. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be notified and given instructions on how to schedule to take the performance exam. In order to be considered, all candidates that are notified that they meet the minimum qualifications must take the performance exam.  Otherwise, the employment application will be considered incomplete.  The exam is a work simulated computer based performance test covering the following areas: call summarization, character comparison, cross referencing, data entry, decision making, keyboarding, memory recall, prioritization, probability, reading comprehension, sentence clarity, spelling and suburban-rural map reading.

Successful candidates will be placed on a twelve-month employment list, based on scores obtained on the performance test. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a background investigation, truth verification examination, psychological examination, and employment interview.
