Sheriff's Detentions, Mental Health Clinician

This is a licensed professional class in the Sheriff's Department, Medical Services Division. Mental Health Clinicians provide a wide variety of professional mental health and case management services to inmates with psychiatric disorders. In this position, you will conduct clinical assessments and develop treatment plans within a medical/psychiatric treatment program to patients presenting a varied array of psychiatric/psychological/substance use issues.
 
Ideal candidates will have:
  • Professional level experience as part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team
  • Served as a program specialist or provided technical expertise through the application of appropriate individual or group psycho-therapeutic methods to adults during periods of crisis
  • Familiarity with and ability to function within the organizational structure of a law enforcement agency
  • Experience interfacing with a wide range of community organizations and knowledge of community resources
  • Professional demeanor with other agencies and collaborative partners with inmates and families of inmates
  • Knowledge of the California Welfare Act, Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act and Penal Codes 1026, 2970 and 1370

In addition, the department desires a candidate that displays leadership skills, can communicate effectively, is a knowledge worker, can hold self and others accountable, is a problem solver and is innovative, demonstrates ethical behavior, leverages resources (coaches and develops), drives to excel, maximizes team effectiveness, and is supportive of change.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Current licensure by the State of California as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Marriage, Family and Child Counselor (MFCC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Clinical Psychologist AND 
  2. Possession of a master's degree from an accredited graduate school in social work, psychology, counseling or a closely related field; AND
  3. At least two (2) years of full-time, post master's degree experience in a mental health program providing counseling and crisis intervention to adults under clinical supervision.

Working Conditions
  • Work primarily takes place in an office environment within a locked detention facility
  • Involves frequent contact with persons who are inebriated, uncooperative and/or emotionally disturbed
  • May be exposed to infectious illnesses and to inmates whose behavior is unpredictable and occasionally violent and combative
  • May involve daily travel to various locations throughout San Diego County

Background Qualifications
  • Felony convictions will be disqualifying
  • Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency
  • Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness
  • Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a truth verification examination or test
