THE STUDENT ASSISTANT PROGRAM
Are you currently enrolled in school? Are you looking for an enriching, one- to two-year employment experience? Do you like working with people from all different backgrounds, learning new things, and participating on a team? Then keep reading!

The Seattle Public Library invites applications from high school, vocational/technical school and undergraduate college students for its Student Assistant Program. This program helps prepare students like you for entry into the world of employment by providing you with real-life work experience and teaching marketable employment skills. We are looking for applicants who want to further develop their skills working with diverse patrons and staff, providing excellent customer service, and meeting and mastering new challenges. The Library seeks students who are excited about and can commit to participating in this work experience outlined below:

1) WORK LOCATIONS --- Student Assistants work in the Central Library or one of 26 Library branches. An effort will be made to place students according to their preferences; however, students must be aware that this may not be possible in every case, so schedule and location flexibility is very important in determining a candidate's success in placement.

2) JOB DUTIES --- Job duties include sorting, shelving, and retrieving books and other Library materials; processing materials for use; sorting and routing materials using the Dewey Decimal System and other alphanumeric filing schemes; and, in neighborhood branches, occasionally checking materials in and out and helping provide service to Library patrons at public desks or perform support duties for Library staff.

3) TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT --- Selected students will receive paid training in basic job duties, required work skills, and Library services and programs. Other developmental experiences provided during the student's two-year program include special developmental training and workshops on topics such as customer service and diversity.

HOW ARE STUDENTS CHOSEN?

All applications received will be carefully reviewed according to the qualifications listed below, and the strongest candidates will be invited to an orientation and will participate in an alpha-numeric filing skills assessment. Those who pass the skills assessment will be considered for interviews at locations where vacancies arise if they have indicated interest in working at that location on their application. Vacancies arise at various times and it isn't possible to predict when or where a position might become available. A call to interview for a new specific vacancy could happen at any time during your eligibility period.

Screening application materials can take between 4 and 6 weeks following the application deadline. Throughout the application and screening process, you are welcome to log in to your online applicant profile and view your status in the recruitment. As applications are screened, the status of your application will be updated online. If you have questions regarding your application status, please check your status online before contacting Human Resources.
