Position Description

The Seattle Department of Transportation's (SDOT) Project Development division is seeking qualified candidates for the Associate Transportation Planner position. This position will serve as project manager for specific projects, or a collection of activities for a series of projects on active transportation projects. Position will also develop concepts, 10% design packages, monitor progress on a programmatic level for multiple projects, manage schedule and budget, identify impediments to progress, and initiate solutions with appropriate parties while understanding the bigger picture of implementation of transportation projects in the City.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate a multi-discipline, multi-section, and multi-agency team in the initiation, execution, and completion of complex, highly visible projects and programs
  • Serve as primary contact for public communication on transportation capital projects which includes working with constituents, community members, consultants, and other City staff to conduct outreach for transportation capital improvements projects
  • Coordinate and participate in the selection, planning, scope development, conceptual design, and outreach for Safe Routes to School and Neighborhood Greenway projects
  • Serve as project manager on projects involving several design specialties including arterial improvements; develop and monitor scopes, schedules, and budgets; and take corrective actions to address emerging issues
  • Provide staff support to the School Traffic Safety Committee including leading the member recruitment process and acting as a liaison between the Board and SDOT
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for all projects
  • Collect and analyze traffic data in the field and in the office including traffic volumes and speeds, pedestrian and bicycle counts, and collision history
  • Employ a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of transportation planning with emphasis on non-motorized transportation
  • Review proposed developments for transportation impacts
  • Represent the Department at various forums and task force meetings to explain and address traffic or transportation issues
  • Prepare and present information about projects that are sometimes controversial to community groups, elected officials and other stakeholders. Tasks include identifying stakeholders, presenting project information, responding to questions and comments, and working to resolve conflicts
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, or related field
  • Two years of transportation planning or development experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base
 
Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Certifications/Licenses:
A valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in MS Project and/or experience using project management software
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and supporting public involvement processes
  • Demonstrated capability to actively manage multiple projects, and monitor and maintain the progress of schedules to meet milestones and budget expenditures
  • Hands-on knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian facility design including arterial and non-arterial street design
  • Multilingual
 
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
