Position Description

Work in the Capital Projects and Roadway Structures Division of Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) as a design lead in the Engineering Services group with a team of professionals whose vision is to be the most innovative and responsive transportation agency in the region. The Associate Multi-Modal Design Engineer will play a lead role in the design and construction of capital improvements projects within the City of Seattle, and serve as the technical designer for civil infrastructure projects likely focused on bicycle, transit, and pedestrian safety/mobility projects. Projects may include work related to Neighborhood Greenways, Bicycle Master Plan, Neighborhood Street Fund, Transit Master Plan, and Pedestrian Master Plan pedestrian and bicycle improvements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary and final analysis and design for intersection geometrics, ADA compliant curb ramps, sidewalk and roadway grading, drainage, traffic calming, street signage, bikeways, multi-use trails, Green Stormwater Infrastructure, pedestrian lighting, and pedestrian signal improvements
  • Prepare plans utilizing AutoCAD
  • Write and review technical specifications, reports, memoranda, transmittals, and other communications
  • Perform quantity take-offs and cost estimating
  • Participate in meetings and presentations, both public and internal
  • Coordinate project activities with other staff including drafting specifications, surveys, project managers, project engineers, etc.
  • Perform and document engineering analysis and calculations in support of design work and other related activities in support of projects
  • Work with project managers and project engineers to coordinate, resolve issues, and support efforts to keep projects within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Provide support to supervisors and project managers for preparation of permit applications and accompanying plans/specifications packages
  • Research existing conditions and perform technical field investigations and inspections as required to support a project through design and construction
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
  • Three years of professional civil engineering experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Certifications/Licenses:
A valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • At least three years of civil engineering experience in design of bicycle facilities, transit improvements, pedestrian facilities, roadways, drainage infrastructure, and pedestrian signal and lighting improvements related to public works transportation facilities
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, Adobe Professional, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT, NACTO, MUTCD, and City/County roadway design standards
  • Familiarity with WA State DOE and City of Seattle drainage ordinances and codes/regulations involving storm-water discharges are highly desirable
  • Multilingual

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. May be required to lift over 50 pounds. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Overnight travel may be required.
