Position Description

The Seattle Department of Transportation's (SDOT) Traffic and Records Unit is seeking an undergraduate or graduate level intern to support special projects. The intern will update data in Hansen, perform collision coding and quality control checks for bike volume data, and create new reports and visualizations based on these data flows.

The business objective of the Traffic and Records Unit is to maintain quality and consistent flow of data for multiple groups within SDOT.  We maintain data within Hansen as well as collision data and bike data - reporting and summarizing the data to multiple groups within SDOT.  Come and join our team, we're always working to improve our visualizations and reporting metrics!

Educational Benefit to Student:

Under supervision, the student will gain exposures to the unit's business objective of  maintaining quality and consistent flow of data for multiple groups within SDOT, gaining skills in bike count data analysis, and ArcGIS, and Hansen 8 software systems.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Review and identify opportunities to integrate data in new and powerful dashboards
  • Use databases (ArcGIS, Hansen8, and Google Maps) to update lane attributes for street segments 
  • Support unit with collision coding as needed
    • Code how incidents and injuries occur using Hansen8 and a collision coding tool
    • Perform quality control for bike counters data as needed. (data collection may require field work)
    • Analyze data and determine if recount or other adjustments are necessary
  • Special projects as needed
Training will be provided for all tasks

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

 Education
Open to undergraduate and graduate students, who are enrolled in an accredited educational program.   

Areas of Study:   Engineering, Geography/GIS, Administrative, Economics, or Business.

  • Undergraduate students will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.
  • Civil engineering students must  maintain a 2.5 GPA or above throughout the internship.
  • Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA or above throughout the internship..
Experience: 
Required
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to quickly perform simple calculations
  • Ability to learn new software and procedures under the direction of others
  • Interest in transportation operations and data management
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with ArcGIS
  • Experience with Microsoft Access
  • Experience with Hansen8
  • Experience with Power Bl or Tableau 

Additional Information

Start/End Dates:  Late mid-January 2020 - upon completion of degree/program.
 
Schedule:
Intern will work 12-20 hours/weeks while school is in session.  Work hours can be scheduled between 8:00am and 4:00pm.
 
SalaryUndergraduates will be paid $16.56/hour. Graduates will be paid $20.30/hour.

Civil engineering majors will be paid between $20.07/hour to $22.59/hour, depending on class status.
