SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a collaborative and detail-oriented Signal, Lighting, and ITS Design Engineer (Senior Civil Engineer) to join our team of professionals working with the Capital Projects and Roadway Structures Divisions whose vision is “to be the most innovative and responsive transportation agency in the region.” Come play a leadership role in the design and construction of capital improvements projects within the City of Seattle and serve as the technical design and project engineer for civil infrastructure projects likely focused on bicycle, transit, and traffic safety projects. Projects may include work related to Neighborhood Greenways, Bicycle Master Plan, Neighborhood Street Fund, Transit Master Plan, and Pedestrian Master Plan improvements. Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises and performs preliminary and final analysis and design for pedestrian lighting, pedestrian signals, street lighting, Real Time Information Signs (RTIS), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), and traffic signal improvements. 
  • Prepares plans utilizing AutoCAD, Civil 3D, BIM Collaborate Pro, and Bluebeam. 
  • Writes and reviews technical specifications, reports, memoranda, transmittals, and other written communications. 
  • Performs quantity take-offs and cost estimating. 
  • Participates in both public and internal meetings and presentations.
  • Supervises and coordinates project activities with other staff including drafting specifications, survey, project managers, engineers, SDOT Traffic Operations, Seattle City Light, etc. 
  • Serves as a Project Engineer on the Departments highest profile and most complex projects. May either lead in-house design teams or direct the technical work of design consultants. 
  • Performs and documents engineering analysis and calculations in support of design work and other related activities in support of projects. 
  • Works with project managers and project engineers to coordinate, resolve issues, and support efforts to keep projects within scope, schedule, and budget. 
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology, or related field. 
Experience:
  • Five (5) years of professional civil engineering experience in transportation.
Professional License:
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:
  • Professional traffic operations engineering experience.
  • Strong capability with AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Extensive experience with delivering plans, specs, and estimates for Public Works projects.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communications skills. 
  • Demonstrated capability to actively manage the design of multiple projects and monitor and maintain the progress of schedules to meet milestones. 
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base. 
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT, NACTO, MUTCD, and City/County roadway design standards 
  • Experience using another language other than English in the workplace. 
Other Requirements:
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 2 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 3 days of the work is completed remotely.
Other Licenses:
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
