SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a highly collaborative and detail-oriented Senior Traffic Project Delivery Engineer (Senior Civil Engineer Specialist) on our Project Design & Delivery team in the Project Development Division. This position is responsible for supervising, performing complex detailed computer-aided designs for Stay Healthy Street / Neighborhood roadways / Pedestrian Master Plan, and other related public works projects. The key role will act as a project manager for these city crew constructed projects. This project manager will also coordinate and act as a liaison between consultants, contractors’ equipment & material suppliers, other city Departments, and other public agencies. Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises and performs complex, detailed computer-aided, ink, or pencil drafting of drawings for preliminary scoping schematics, 30%, 60%, 90% and final designs. This work requires knowledge and the application of various civil and traffic engineering design guidelines and manuals. 
  • Supervises and performs field work to inspect and monitor for all City crew construction projects. 
  • Supervises and performs work order creation for construction projects for all city crews: Storm Drainage, Concrete, Asphalt, Urban Forestry, Signal, Traffic Signs & Markings, Curb Space Management, and Roadway Structures 
  • Checks accuracy of designs, studies and outreach material performed by other engineering personnel. 
  • Supervises preliminary and final construction estimates. 
  • Supervises and performs design process for traffic related improvements including signing, channelization, detours, traffic controls and traffic survey and analysis. 
  • Coordinates and acts as a liaison among between consultants, contractors’ equipment & material suppliers, other City departments, and other public agencies. 
  • Performs research and verification of traffic flow/collision data pertaining to Seattle Fire Response routes, Seattle Public Utilities Garbage/Compost/Recycle pick-up service routes. 
  • Prepares, reviews and approves traffic control plans. 
  • Investigates and resolves complaints from the public related to new projects. 
  • Coordinates design work and related matters with project engineers/coordinators or supervisors. 
  • Serves as a technical expert for traffic calming techniques, material procurement, and project implementation techniques. 
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative. 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technologyor related field.
Experience:
  • Four (4) years of civil engineering or construction technology experience.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
 
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:
  • Specific civil engineering experience in design of bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facilities, roadways, infrastructure, and signal and lighting improvements related to public works transportation facilities. 
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, Adobe Professional, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D. 
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT, NACTO, MUTCD, and City/County roadway design standards. 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil and construction engineering, including methods, materials, equipment, and techniques used in civil engineering, construction, and inspection. 
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, spec's, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents to ensure contract compliance. 
  • Willingness to work in the field during all types of weather, traffic, and work in or near construction sites. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide diverse population.
Other Requirements:
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Most work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 2 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 3 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular work week.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites. 
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds. 
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. 
License:
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
