The Opportunity:  
 
 
WSDOT has a special opportunity for a progressive engineering professional who has enthusiasm for the safety and efficiency of pedestrian and bicycle transportation design in coordination with overall transit systems. This professional will serve as a key subject matter expert who will help govern successful implementation and operation of standards, policies, and project planning of extremely progressive transportation projects. This position will perform the following work:
 

  • Continual research of latest concepts and technology related to pedestrian, bicycle, and transit issues to refine and improve current best practices and processes.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and main point of contact for ADA accommodation, transit stops, crosswalks, enhanced crossing devices, school speed zones and crossings, maintenance of trails, pedestrian and bicycle shoulder closures, and pedestrian and bicycles routes.
  • Actively and diplomatically communicate policy development related to a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Provide training to team members to current best practices.
  • Conduct cost analysis to prioritize related projects.
  • Draft grant applications.
  • Analyze and respond to pedestrian, bicycle, and transit related inquires.
  • Other duties as assigned.
     
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have: 
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Two years of experience in highway design, traffic operation, or other closely related field.
  • Expert working knowledge of engineering principles and practices and related guidelines related to the safety and mobility of pedestrians.
  • Ability to independently apply engineering judgement to analyze and implement appropriate actions pertaining to the safe and convenient accommodation of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit users and providers.
  • Ability to perform independent field reviews under various weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication ability, both written and verbal.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
 
Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
