The Opportunity:
Washington State Ferries (WSF) is actively seeking an experienced welder to work in our facility at Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island. You will perform skilled welder work on the many terminals and vessels that make up the Washington State Ferry System so trips to various jobsites are required. To be successful in this position you will need strong experience maintaining and repairing marine vessels with a focus in laying out, fitting, and welding fabricated, cast and forged components. Your work will help maintain a vital fleet that provides a dynamic transportation system that helps serve the livelihood of the Puget Sound communities.      
The Eagle Harbor facility is located within walking distance of the WSF ferry terminal.
 
The ferry system is fortified by skilled maintenance team, which supports the largest ferry system in the United States.  Serving eight counties within Washington and the Province of British Columbia in Canada the system has 10 routes and 20 terminals that are served by 22 vessels and approximately 1,800 amazing employees.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Repair and fabricate a variety of steel parts and equipment in repair of ferry vessels, docs, and terminals.
  • Lay out, fit, and weld a wide variety of components to assemble structural forms including machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, and building and bridge parts.
  • Set up equipment and weld parts using various welding equipment including gas-shielded arc or gas welding equipment.
  • Repair equipment by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts.
  • Other duties as required. 
 
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Journey-level status as a welder or completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a welder.
  • Experience with maintenance of marine vessels.
  • Ability to drive a forklift and light truck or van as necessary.
  • Ability to work at different job sites.
  • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver's license and possess, or be able to acquire a Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC, www.tsa.gov/twic) within 90 days of their hire date.   


Note: 
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
