The Opportunity:  
The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division (WSF) is currently seeking an Engineering professional with a passion for structural engineering. You will be responsible for unique engineering solutions specific to WSF Ferry Terminal needs. It's a rare opportunity to truly make a mark in facilities that represent a true Washington State icon. The ferry system is fortified by a truly talented Engineering Team which supports the largest ferry system in the United States.  Serving eight counties within Washington and the Province of British Columbia in Canada the system has 10 routes and 20 terminals that are served by 22 vessels and approximately 1,800 amazing employees.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Perform varied engineering duties including designs of reinforced concrete, steel, and wood structures within the ferries system utilizing structural engineering software.
  • Prepare complex detail and layout drawings.
  • Collaborate with design teams to assist in delivery of expanded projects.
  • Collaborate on tasks related to load rating, the Vehicle Overweight Program, the Seismic Retrofit Program, and the Asset Management Program.
  • Inspect ferry terminals and provide recommendations for repair and maintenance.
  • Conduct facility analysis and prepare facility condition reports.
  • Review structural engineering submittals.
  • Collaborate in the development of contract specifications.
  • Perform quantity calculations and determine construction cost estimate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
 An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Structural, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or other closely related field of study.
  • One or more years' of related engineering experience, including use of structural engineering analysis software and familiarity with both the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the International Building Code.
  • EIT (Engineer-In-Training Certification)
  • Ability to work responding to emergency circumstances.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and climb on ladders in a variety weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds unassisted.
  • A valid driver's license.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
