This special duty assignment will last through the end of 2016 with a potential to extend the assignment based on business needs and mutual agreement. It reports to the Chief of Staff for the Department of Elections and will be responsible for writing communications to inform voters, stakeholders and others about elections in King County, including media advisories, blog posts, talking points and other materials. A large part of this role will be serving as the lead for King County Election's active social media presence, as well as responding to media and other inquiries in what is sure to be a very busy election season.  This position will also support on-site tours, media events, press conferences and other communication related events.

This position will work with a team of highly qualified election professionals so while some election experience would be helpful, it will be more important for this individual to be able to learn quickly and translate the information they get onto a variety of platforms and for a variety of audiences.

WORK SCHEDULE:  The Communication Specialist II is a full time non-exempt position Monday through Friday and in accordance with the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act is overtime eligible.  We require the flexibility to work additional hours during peak periods of the Election cycle.

Job Duties

In this role you will have the opportunity to:

  • Curate the department's various social media feeds – including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat – and develop original content and advertising.
  • Manage the department's blog, Election Connection, which includes web publishing, researching, gathering photos and writing regular blog posts.
  • Produce written materials such as media advisories and talking points.
  • Assist with the coordination of communications-related events, such a press conferences and speaking engagements for the Director.
  • Prepare, monitor, update and help coordinate content (both written and graphic) for the Elections website.
  • Respond to media inquiries and facilitate media appearances by the Director.
  • Actively engage with employees across the department to identify communication needs and issues

The ideal candidate will write well for a variety of mediums and audiences, will be have strong social media experience, and will be able to learn quickly. 

Most competitive candidates will have demonstrated the following experiences:
  • Experience curating a variety of social media platforms. 
  • Comfortable and skilled using emerging tools, devices and platforms
  • Experience working with GovDelivery.

Sick Leave is accumulated at the rate of one day per month. There is no restriction on the amount of sick leave that can be accumulated and carried over to subsequent years. At retirement an employee will be paid 35% of their unused, accumulated sick leave. Non-represented employees and employees in certain bargaining units will receive this benefit as a payment to a VEBA account, which pays for post-retirement health benefits on a pre-tax basis.
