Position Description

Work in the Capital Projects & Roadway Structures (CPRS) Division of the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) with a team of professionals whose mission is to deliver a high-quality transportation system for Seattle. CPRS is seeking multiple Project Managers for its Project Management team. The Project Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the efforts of a diverse team of City and non-City staff, consultants, and community members, to deliver our projects on time and within budget. The Project Manager will manage transportation capital projects and coordinate the planning, design, and construction processes for capital improvement projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as Project Manager for Arterial Asphalt & Concrete paving projects, Bike/Ped Facility Projects, Bridge Seismic/Bridge Planning Projects, multi-modal corridor projects, in addition to other capital projects as needed; manage project scope, schedule, and budget from design through construction
  • Manage consultant contracts and lead project teams from project definition through construction completion
  • As a licensed Engineer, prepare and/or oversee the design and engineering work performed by project team staff; stamp, sign, and seal engineering plans and drawings on an as needed basis
  • Conduct project associated public outreach and attend meetings to determine objectives, program plans, and project scope
  • Develop and negotiate schedules for design and construction; and monitor and coordinate activities of contractors, consultants, committees, community organizations, and users during construction
  • Coordinate project closeout and budget reconciliation
  • Monitor and evaluate projects to ensure adherence to project specifications and standards
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, advertisements, and official documents
  • Support the planning of capital improvement and other City funded/sponsored projects by preparing necessary documents outlining scope of project, objectives, methodologies, and major duties of project participants
  • Provide information to the public at public meetings and hearings to explain project activities and answer questions
  • Serve as liaison with other departments and agencies with respect to projects assigned
  • Coordinate consultant selection process; negotiate and administer consultant contracts; coordinate all aspects of contract between other staff; and evaluate consultant performance
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
  • Five years of professional civil engineering experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Certifications/Licenses:
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Strong proficiency in using MS Word, MS Project, and MS Excel with experience using project management software
  • Demonstrated written communication and good oral communication skills, and supporting public involvement processes
  • Strong organizational, time management, and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated capability to actively manage multiple projects and monitor and maintain the progress of schedules to meet milestones and budget expenditures
  • Multilingual

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. May be required to lift over 50 pounds. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Overnight travel may be required.
