Position Description

The Seattle Department of Transportation's (SDOT) Project Development division's Project Design and Delivery group is seeking qualified candidates for the Assistant Civil Engineering Specialist I position. This position will perform professional civil engineering drafting and engineering work in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of crew delivered projects that include Neighborhood Greenways, Safe Routes to School, Transit Spot, Vision Zero, Pedestrian, and Bicycle Programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed computer-aided drafting of drawings and maps including, base maps, cross sections, topographical maps, as-built drawings, sketches, and graphs; make right-of-way and alignment calculations; create and update existing maps and drawings primarily for crew delivered projects
  • Visit work sites to gather, inspect, monitor, survey, or verify information for construction and civil engineering-related projects and facilities
  • Prepare work orders to start repairs; assist in design work; keep notes, diaries, records and drawings to document findings
  • Research and verify data pertaining to maps and drawings; interpret inspectors' notes, field checks, surveys and existing records to assure that maps and drawings are accurate and reflect improvements
  • Review plans and development proposals for impacts related to project overlap with utilities, traffic, transportation, and street improvements; recommend partnerships and revisions to mitigate negative impacts
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and other departments about the process, requirements, and procedures of Project Development's programs, projects, and processes; investigate and resolve complaints from the public
  • Perform contract administration activities including processing final payments to contractors, verifying final quantities, and costs, compiling requisite documentation, and auditing as-built records 
  • Assist in preparing preliminary and final construction estimates and specifications for construction projects; assist in preparing bid item lists and estimated quantities
  • Act as a liaison among crews, contractors, or suppliers and City; negotiate problems of changes, errors, or deficiencies and ensures compliance with project specifications and requirements
  • Verify projects are completed per plan and follows up with crews and contractors to create final punch lists
  • Assist in preparation of plans and designs for project and traffic related improvements including signing, channelization, signal, civil, detours, traffic controls, and traffic survey and analysis
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other agencies, departments, divisions, and private utilities involved in or affected by project(s)
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology; or two years of civil engineering experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base
 
Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Licensing/Certifications/Other Requirements:
A valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility
An AutoCAD exam will be conducted, as well as a written Engineering test
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, as well as Hansen and GIS software; knowledge of databases and their application and use in a work environment
  • Ability to multi-task and produce high quality work within tight deadlines
  • Flexibility and adaptability in terms of work assignments
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while keeping supervisor informed of progress and issues
  • Strong organizational, detail, time management, and customer service skills
  • Ability to work effectively under strict timelines and constantly changing priorities
  • Ability to solve problems and absorb and apply new information
  • Multilingual
 
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. May be required to lift over 50 pounds. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
