Position Description

The Seattle Department of Transportation's (SDOT) Project Development division's Project Design and Delivery group is seeking qualified candidates for the Senior Capital Projects Coordinator position. This position will develop SDOT projects for holistic transportation needs consistent with Citywide and Departmental objectives, right-of-way allocation priorities, modal plans, and public input to create comprehensive scopes, schedules, budgets, and preliminary design for delivery by Capital Projects. Projects may include Accessible Mt Baker, Rainier Safety Corridor, Bicycle Master Plan Implementation project, and other multi-modal projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and/or co-manage the conceptual design and planning phase of large-scale multi-modal corridors including the Accessible Mt Baker project and Vision Zero Safety Corridors
  • Manage, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, the public, and elected officials on highly visible, controversial, and complex projects
  • Direct planning meetings to determine objectives, program plans, and project scopes
  • Develop and negotiate schedules for preliminary design; manage and coordinate activities of internal staff and consultants 
  • Coordinate consultant selection process; prepare, negotiate, and administer, consultant agreements
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, advertisements, and official docu­ments and give presentations
  • Plan and develop a citizen participation plan to inform and explain project objectives and answer questions from the public, media, and other agencies 
  • Coordinate the preparation and review of multiple reports and studies including, but not limited to, public involvement plans, alternatives analysis, traffic analysis, pavement design, drainage memo, scope of work, project budget and schedule, planning-level cost estimates, and 10% design plans
  • Manage scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables for consultant contracts
  • Supervise one or more staff in a matrix-managed environment
  • Encourage collaboration across departments and divisions
  • Participate in division or department wide efforts to address transportation, capital development, race and social justice, regional planning, growth management, environmental, and other issues
  • Support departmental goals in promoting diversity, racial equality, and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Business Administration, Urban Planning, or related field
  • Four years of project management experience, construction management experience, or related experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Certifications/Licenses:
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in planning and design of multi-modal transportation projects including bicycle, transit, pedestrian, freight, and transportation safety programs
  • Experience in the oversight of projects in planning and design
  • Experience working closely with multiple public agencies
  • Proven success in public outreach especially with controversial projects; ability to approach challenges with diplomacy, flexibility, and strong negotiating skills
  • Proficiency in using MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel, AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Cloud, SketchUp, and other planning and design related software
  • Strong team member and willingness to collaborate with a variety of different teams throughout the department
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Multilingual

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Overnight travel may be required.
