Position Description

Work in the Project Development Division of Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) as a leader in the Project Delivery Unit working with a team of professionals whose vision is to be the most innovative and responsive transportation agency in the region. This position is responsible for designing and project managing crew delivered projects that include Neighborhood Greenways, Safe Routes to School projects, Transit Spot Improvement, and other Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan implementation projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as project engineer/coordinator on multi-modal projects involving several design specialties including: channelization, signal modification, transit facility, and miscellaneous pedestrian, bicycle, and transit improvements along both arterial and non-arterial roadways 
  • Perform detailed CAD drawings as well as necessary computations in the preparation of preliminary and final plans
  • Perform preliminary and final designs and/or prepare design criteria for roadways, signal and lighting systems, and other related public works projects
  • Prepare cost estimates, and engineering and feasibility reports/studies for public works projects and utility improvements
  • Prepare and monitor project and program schedules and budgets
  • Review, evaluate, and correct final plans, specifications, and agreements; coordinate and oversee work of crews, contractors, affected public agencies, and utilities to ensure compliance
  • Oversee project progress from design through construction
  • Conduct field inspections of work done by crews and contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications  
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and other departments about the process, requirements, and procedures of the development process; investigate and resolve complaints from the public
  • Develop plans, designs, specifications, and instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of traffic signals, signing, lighting, pavement markings, and design standards
  • Review shop drawings, material sources, and specifications during construction
  • Prepare a variety of reports, correspondence and official documents
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other agencies, departments, divisions, and private utilities involved in or affected by projects
  • Participate in presentations, special projects, and assignments as directed
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
  • Three years of professional civil engineering experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Certifications/Licenses:
A valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • At least three years of civil engineering experience in design of bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facilities, roadways, infrastructure, and signal and lighting improvements related to public works transportation facilities
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, Adobe Professional, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT, NACTO, MUTCD, and City/County roadway design standards
  • Experience administering public works construction contracts, including projects with Federal funding
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil and construction engineering, including methods, materials, equipment, and techniques used in civil engineering, construction, and inspection
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, spec's, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents to ensure contract compliance
  • Strong proficiency in using MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, and Adobe Professional
  • Registration as an Engineer-in-Training in the State of Washington
  • Multilingual

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City field and office environment. Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. May be required to lift over 50 pounds. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Overnight travel may be required.
