Position Description

The City of Tacoma, Public Works Engineering Division is recruiting for the position of Associate Planner within the Traffic Engineering Section. 
 
We are seeking a collaborative team member that  will be responsible for performing a variety of duties with a primary focus on continuing the work begun through the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Implementation Plan to support and encourage students and families to safely walk, bike, and skateboard to school. The position will work with Tacoma School District staff, City staff, parents, and community members to create safe active transportation environments at and around schools. Additional tasks will include seeking funding opportunities, creating new policy for school development, piloting strategies to reach underserved communities, providing programmatic support for under-resourced schools, and assisting with neighborhood traffic concerns.

Our Ideal Candidate will have experience working in school transportation, community planning, public engagement, traffic safety engineering, neighborhood planning, or related fields.  The candidate will have a broad understanding of the areas mentioned above, as well as working knowledge of relevant City codes and policies, and other state and federal laws that inform our daily work.

Essential Duties:

  • Developing and coordinating implementation of the City's Safe Routes to School Program in partnership with the Tacoma School District and other community stakeholders, specific to improving equity, education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement, and evaluation.
  •  Coordinating the assessment and construction of capital improvements around schools to create safe walking and bicycling routes.
  •  Designing/Implementing in partnership with Tacoma Metro Parks, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, transit agencies, and other local agencies, programs to improve the safety of transportation near schools and other critical destinations.
  •  Assisting with inquiries and participation in the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program (Neighborhood Programs).
  •  Collaborating with short- and long-range planning staff to ensure that ongoing  development and policies support SRTS goals.

Qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (TRAINING AND EDUCATION):
Bachelor's degree in planning, architecture, public policy, urban design, public administration, engineering or related area of study.

OR

Four years training and work experience performing the functions of an Associate Planner.
