Job Summary

The Bellevue Department of Transportation is seeking to fill a Transportation Engineer Intern position. This position will work within Bellevue's Traffic Engineering group, which manages the city's daily traffic operations. These operations include traffic signals, street lighting, signage, and multimodal traffic solutions.
 
This internship is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to gain on the job experience through working with a team of engineers on conceptual designs, data analysis, traffic operations, and other elements of transportation projects. It also offers students the opportunity to take on more in-depth and independent projects as they gain engineering experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following list include potential tasks and responsibilities for this position.
 
Engineering Support:  Provide engineering and technical support to engineering staff.
 
Project Engineering:   Assist engineers in developing traffic engineering project plans, specifications, and estimates. Become familiar with design standards and the MUTCD. Prepare detailed drawings using AutoCAD design software.
 
Engineering Studies: Conduct engineering studies for signal installation, crosswalk installation, street lighting, and traffic collision reduction. Prepare reports and recommendations.
 
Citizen Requests:       Support engineering staff in reviewing and responding to concerns of Bellevue residents.
 
Signal Operations:      Assist engineers with signal timing and the operation of an adaptive signal system (SCATS). Learn to create signal models and conduct analysis using Synchro modeling software.
 
Traffic Data:                Perform and manage data collection using cameras, traffic counts, field visits, and SCATS software. Analyze and summarize data and prepare reports.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:          

  • Currently enrolled as a Civil Engineering or Pre-Engineering undergraduate student
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record       
  • Must be able to work part time at Bellevue City Hall during the school year             
Desired Qualifications:
  • Preferred Freshman or Sophomore (Graduation date June 2020 or later)
  • Strong interest in transportation
  • Knowledge of or desire to learn AutoCAD and Excel
Benefits:
  • Hands on experience with industry standard engineering software, including AutoCAD, AGi32 (roadway lighting design software), AutoTurn (vehicle turn simulation software), and Synchro (traffic simulation software)

Salary:            Starting at $ 18.17/hr
 
Hours:            Students would be expected to work full time (40 hours per week) during the summer and part time (8 to 20 hours per week) during the school year. Part time hours flexible to student's class schedule.
