Position Details

The City of Auburn has several volunteer Citizens Boards, Commissions and Committees that advise the Mayor and City Council in certain areas of government and policy issues. Appointments to Boards, Commissions and Committees are made by the Mayor and in some instances require confirmation by the City Council.

Persons interested in serving on a particular Board, Commission or Committee are asked to apply for the specific board or commission of interest.  Below are the current openings available and Auburn residents are strongly encouraged to apply for vacant positions.

Primary Duties

Auburn Municipal Airport Advisory Board 

(Chapter 2.33 Auburn City Code)
Advises the City Council regarding the operation of the Auburn Municipal Airport, including master planning, facilities improvements, leasing, rental fees and other aviation concerns. The Board consists of seven members who serve three-year terms.

The Board is required to meet at least once a quarter. The Board may hold additional meetings as needed that will be published in advance. Board meetings begin at 7:30 a.m. and are held at the Airport Office, Conference Room, 2143 E ST NE, Auburn, WA 98002.
 
Civil Service Commission  

(Chapter 2.57 Auburn City Code and RCW 41.08 and 41.12)
The Civil Service Commission adopts rules and regulations, consistent with State law, for the examination, appointment, demotion, transfer, and promotion of uniformed (Police and Fire) personnel. The Commission hears and determines complaints and appeals. The Commission consists of three members who serve six-year terms. A member must be a resident of the city for at least three years and a registered voter.

Regular meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 3:30 PM in Conference Room 2, located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall.
 
Human Services Committee

(Chapter 2.36 Auburn City Code)
Makes recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on the allocation of and application for grant funds to be used for community development. The Committee assists the Mayor and City Council in identifying local social service needs and recommends priorities to meet those needs. The Committee consists of nine members who serve three-year terms.

Regular meetings are scheduled for the fourth Monday of each month at 4:00 PM at Auburn City Hall Council Conference Room.

Parks and Recreation Board
 
(Chapter 2.42 Auburn City Code)
Advises the Mayor and City Council on planning, development, acquisition and management of City parks, recreation facilities and programs. The Parks and Recreation Board consists of seven members who serve three-year terms.

Regular meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 PM at the Auburn Community & Event Center located at 910 9th St SE, Auburn.

Transportation Advisory Board
 
(Chapter 2.94 Auburn City Code)
The Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) replaces the Transportation, Transit and Trails Committee. The TAB meets quarterly or as needed and is comprised of 15 members that includes 1 representative from the Auburn School District; 1 representative from Green River College; 1 representative from the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce; 1 representative from the Auburn Downtown Association; 1 representative from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe; 2 local business representatives; 1 bicycling community representative; 1 high school student representative; 1 senior citizen representative; 3 citizens at large selected to maximize geographical representation; 1 American with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility advocacy group representative; and 1 transit users group representative. The TAB meetings are facilitated by a Chairperson or Vice-Chairperson elected by the TAB members. The TAB is an advisory only body meaning that it doesn't have independent decision-making ability. However, as a broad-based group of stakeholders, the TAB serves a critical role in giving the Mayor, Council and staff invaluable community perspective that will help shape current and future policy and financial decisions affecting transportation in our community.

Regular meetings are held quarterly on the second Tuesday of every month at 5:30 PM.

Tourism Board
 
(Chapter 2.77 of Auburn City Code)
The board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the mayor and city council, as the tourism board, to be distinguished from the city's lodging tax advisory committee, established by city ordinance codified under Chapter 2.76 ACC, and pursuant to RCW 67.28.1817. (Ord. 6041 § 1, 2006.)

The tourism board is created to assist the city council formulate strategies for tourism-related activities, projects and programs geared to promote the city of Auburn as a tourist destination, and enhance the ability of local businesses to serve the needs of tourists and the tourist industry in Auburn.
 

Regular meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 10:00 AM at Auburn City Hall in Council Chambers.
 

Urban Tree Board

 (Chapter 2.43 Auburn City Code)
Through education and involvement, the Tree Board of the City of Auburn provides information and advocacy for "choosing the right tree for the right place," helping Citizens understand the value of proper pruning techniques and in managing an urban forest that is ever changing and needs to fit into the environment of this community. Board emphasis is on trees in public rights-of-way and on City-owned property. The Board is made up of seven members who serve three-year terms.
 
Regular meetings of the Board are held the first Tuesday of each month in the Parks Admin Building at 910 9th St. SE, Auburn.
 
White River Valley Museum Board
 
Serving on this board, you will help raise funds to support Museum programs, develop policies for White River Valley Museum operations and management of collections, and oversee long-term plans for the Museum and Mary Olson Farm. Board membership is comprised of nine members elected by the general membership of the Historical Society, and eight members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

Regular meetings of the Board are held the third Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the White River Valley Museum, Muckleshoot Room, located at 918 H St SE, Auburn.  Most board members also serve on a committee which may required an hour of additional monthly service.
